Description
Sequence annotation is often hierarchical in nature - complex annotation involves several detailed regions that signify that a higher level annotation can be attached to a broader region of sequence, or attributed to the sequence region as a whole.
Furthermore, annotation types and annotation groups are hierarchical since they are often based on ontological terms, and its useful to be able to control the display of features by selecting a general term with which a group of features are associated (e.g. show or hide all binding sites - regardless of whether they are protein, ligand, etc...).
