Description
PDBx/mmCIF is the recommended format for the exchange of 3D structures without data loss. It includes support for arbitrary numbers of chains, and representation of biological, chemical and experimental metadata.
Jmol v14 already includes support for mmCIF, so a bare metal parser already exists, but jalview's datamodel and 3D data processing architecture will need to be changed to cope with the greater bandwidth afforded by the mmCIF format.
The PDB fetcher service format parameter will also need to be changed so accessions are retrieved as mmCIF rather than PDB files.
