allow column widths (aka character width) to be specified independent of base alignment font size

      Description

      The applet allows column width to be specified as a command line parameter, but whilst the application allows columns to be wider than the font using the middle-button-click-drag zoom operation, it doesn't actually store the column widths or allow them to be specified independently of font-size.
