Single file backup scheme removes the backup file every other save

      Description

      When using the single file backup scheme (i.e. the backup file is called filename.ext~) is used, when the backup file does not exist it is created (and is correctly the previous version of the file). When it does exist, it gets removed altogether (and the new saved file is correct, but there is no backup file of the previous version).
