      Description

      Java Webstart launch of Jalview has become extremely slow.

      Symptoms:
      1. Very long wait after the 'Application Verification' splash screen before the Jalview desktop appears.
      2. Different parts of Jalview UI are very slow to respond, particularly database fetcher initialisation, etc.

      If System java console is enabled, pressing '5' yields lots of network: messages relating to retrieval of .class files directly from the www.jalview.org server.
